Academic travel is one of the pillars of the Global Advantage Program. By developing courses that combine experiential, and traditional classroom, learning students are able to realize unique, potent, long-term benefits. Relational learning has always been at the heart of Lasallian education and, with the expectation of “curiosity and civility, preparation and participation” students are able to fully realize the possibilities available to them. It can support students in developing the essential skills of intercultural communication, perspective taking, and behavioral adaptability (Sisiky 2022).
The term global competence is often used to define this body of knowledge, skills, and dispositions - “the capacity to examine local, global and intercultural issues, to understand and appreciate the perspectives and worldviews of others, to engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions with people from different cultures, and to act for collective well-being and sustainable development” (OECD, 2018; Boix-Mansilla & Jackson, 2011.
Whenever possible, academic travel courses should include connections with other Lasallian schools and inclusion in the student's academic record.
